Here's an interesting TEDTalk that I just saw from 2023. That's right, the future.
In fact, it's a viral video meant to promote Ridley Scott's quasi-prequel to the Alien film franchise. At first I was wondering why TEDTalk would partner up with a movie like Prometheus and even the movie's screen writer Damon Lindelof thought that Ted would never agree with it (he would've used the name "NEDTalks"). It so happens that Ted is a geek and open to the cross promotional idea of having a new audience learn about TEDTalk and in exchange for showing TEDTalk fans the viral footage. The character in the video is Peter Weyland, successor of Charles Bishop Weyland from the first Alien movie. From TED Blog:
"Peter Weyland has been a magnet for controversy since he announced his intent to build the first convincingly humanoid robotic system by the end of the decade.
Whether challenging the ethical boundaries of medicine with nanotechnology or going toe to toe with the Vatican itself on the issue of gene-therapy sterilization, Sir Peter prides himself on his motto, “If we can, we must.” After a three year media blackout, Weyland has finally emerged to reveal where he’s heading next. Wherever that may be, we will most certainly want to follow.
Conceived and designed by Ridley Scott and Damon Lindelof and directed by Luke Scott."
I always liked the idea of mixing thing together in unsuspecting ways or imaginingg how the future would turn out to be. The video itself is interesting if you know it's a Prometheus teaser (preacher-like, no good, something-crazy-bound-to-happen feeling) but not entirely exciting for those who were actually expecting a real TEDTalk.
